A gripping story I could not stop reading once I started
From a small village in the Harz mountain in the middle of Germany, a very difficult youth with an abusive father and a mother who could not stand up to her husband, to Berlin under the indiscriminate bombardment by allied air forces, family evacuated to a small town at the Harz mountains, living there under dismal conditions. Too young yet to be called up to the army he nevertheless is mobilised and armed with a bazooka to come the defence of the town during the last gasps of German's desperate effort to stave off the final surrender. He never got to the point to fire his bazooka though, prudence got the better of him, following the example of more mature combat tends.

He finally brakes loose of his past and succeeds in immigrating into the USA where he has some relatives.
There the US Army calls him for duty in Korea. But that war ended before he finished his training and he was, what irony of fate - sent back to Germany as a soldier of the US occupation force.

But this deployment earned him the citizenship and the means to study at a US university. He took full advantage of the chances given to him, succeeds in civilian life "in the service of his (ex)enemies" of the Berlin bombing.

He was financially successful and, after a few turns and contretemps finally settled in Guatemala for the simple life he dreamed of since his youth, where he spent capital and effort to help the poor, with all its successes and failures.

A life story of overcoming hardship to economic success and of employing the fruits of that success in the helping of the disadvantaged in Meso-America

There are not enough of men or women of his caliber.

In my enemy service eBook Peter Meyer Reviews

This book is both enjoyable and difficult to read, because at times it plumbs the depths of human darkness and other times offers humorous commentary on the quirky situations that life can present. Overall it is a frank and at times brutal tale that occasionally made me wonder if it was real (but the author includes photos and other documentation, and I saw no inconsistencies, so I assume it is all as the author remembered). Originally I was interested in this book for the history regarding World War II, and it did give me new insights about that, but that was a relatively small part of the book. Unexpectedly, I found his experiences after leaving the US to be even more valuable as a result of the unique and sometimes eye-opening perspectives he shares. I would not wish to experience what he experienced, but I envy his ability to continue finding good in people and seeking to make the world, and himself, better. It is easy to become discouraged and cynical in this world, but the author demonstrates that more positive choices can be made about how we react to our experiences. For those who are able to read an unsheltered and realistic personal history that spans multiple cultures, countries, and continents, I recommend this book.
Compelling first hand account of a part of history that I assumed was lost to us. Fascinating person with a fascinating life.
What a wonderfully told memoir of a life lived in the front seat of Twentieth Century history. Peter Meyer's story will keep you reading and amazed. I am so glad he shared his life and the lessons learned with us.
The author, Peter Meyer, is a friend of mine; we live in the same community. So, in reading his memoir
both because I know him and because he sprinkles the chapters with relevant pictures, I had the
vision of the man I know in mind. However....a week or two after reading it, the protagonist lost the
image of Peter and became a mythic man whose life was directed by an unseen vista of the joy of living,
of making silk purses from sow's ears, of self-honor in a world of terror and disgrace. The book reveals
some amazing adventures in the many facets of this life and admits to some dreadful mistakes also.
I would rate it higher, but I was occasionally startled by chapters that are not in historical order.
A really fascinating life and a pleasure to read!
